Vision of the future of Hollywood strike

Thus far, the strike by TV and film writers has been relatively benign. Many of our favorite shows remain on the air and the cineplexes haven't changed a bit. But what if this keeps up?

Though the Writers Guild of America and the studios are set to resume talks next week, many are forecasting a protracted battle that could last as long as the 1988 strike, which went 22 weeks, or even longer. Here's a speculative look at what might happen if the strike drags on:

RIGHT NOW: Late-night talk shows immediately went into repeats when the strike began two weeks ago. Production has now ceased on numerous shows, such as NBC's "The Office" and CBS's "Two and a Half Men." The new season of Fox's "24," which had been set to premiere in January, has been delayed so that it can run without interruption.

N'Dour's Language Lesson

Youssou N'Dour is arguably the most well-known and critically heralded living African musician, and for good reason: In more than 20 years of playing and recording, he has invented languages, introduced indigenous forms of music to the popular canon, and shined unflinching lights on the lives of his fellow Africans. The Senegalese artist possesses one of the most expressive voices in music, and backing that unmistakable instrument is a supremely gifted group, the Super Etoile, which has been with Mr. N'Dour since the early 1980s. Throughout its career, the band has spiced its already gripping West African sound with appropriated Western rock and pop, creating a singular sound in African and global pop in the process.

It's a vibrant, personal music that never stays in one place for too long.

The Devil's music ought to be heavenly at weekend concerts

THE DEVIL Makes Three is one of the Bay Area's most versatile bands.

The Santa Cruz-reared trio — which consists of vocalist-guitarist Pete Bernhard, bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean — is seemingly comfortable playing in just about any type of setting.

It has held court at bluegrass festivals, country shindigs and other old-timey events.

Most impressively, the threesome was seen wowing a crowd during the Treasure Island Music Festival, the recent indie-rock celebration that also featured such acts as Modest Mouse and Spoon.

No matter the setting, the band's acoustic sound — which mixes the styles from the ragtime and country music of the 1920s and '30s with more-modern rock and punk — seems to be a hit with listeners.

That will likely be the case again when the group performs on Friday and Saturday at the Independent in San Francisco.

Little Mermaid Postpones Broadway Opening

Due to the ongoing stagehands strike that has temporarily shuttered 27 Broadway shows, the new Disney musical The Little Mermaid has postponed its Broadway opening.

The musical, which began previews Nov. 3, was scheduled to officially open at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre Dec. 6. That date has been postponed; a new opening date has yet to be announced.

The news of the postponement was announced Nov. 20 in a press statement that reads, "As a result of the current labor dispute, the new Broadway production of Disney's The Little Mermaid has postponed its previously announced Opening Night performance on December 6th. Previews will resume when the dispute is resolved and a revised plan for opening night will be announced at that time."

Sierra Boggess heads the cast in the title role of Ariel, who longs "to be where the people are" (as the lyric goes), above the water's surface.

Broadway Talks To Resume This Weekend

NEW YORK (AP) — Striking stagehands and Broadway producers are going back to the bargaining table, less than a week before the start of the lucrative Thanksgiving holiday weekend when most plays and musicals experience a box-office bonanza.

Negotiations will resume this weekend "at an undisclosed place and time," the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and the League of American Theatres said Wednesday. "No comment from either organization will be issued until further notice," both sides said in a joint statement.

Was there pressure to return to the talks before Thanksgiving, when the city is filled with visitors here for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the start of the Christmas shopping season?

"It was a factor," said Norman Samnick, an entertainment lawyer who specializes in labor relations for Bryan Cave LLP.
