Web Exclusive: Bernadette Peters takes Touhill stage Nov. 10

Singing, acting, comedy: Bernadette Peters does them all with style.

The two-time Tony award-winning Broadway star with the signature long curly red locks, big soulful eyes and knockout figure has been melting hearts for years, while wowing audiences with her bold, brilliant voice and well-tuned sense of comic delivery. Bernadette Peters really is the whole package in entertainment.

Legendary star of stage and screen Bernadette Peters will grace the Touhill stage, Saturday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.

The Broadway babe sings the songs that made her famous, including Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Weber, backed by a 35-piece orchestra. Jim Richards, UM-St. Louis music professor, will be the concertmaster for the show.

Peters' voice still knocks audiences over, despite her impressive résumé of Broadway hits and long career, starting at an early age.

Broadway strike disappoints fans traveling to N.Y. on bus tours

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bus tour packages are a popular way for many out-of-state theater fans to get dinner and see a Broadway show in New York.

But the stagehands' strike has led to waves of disheartened day-trippers, logistical headaches for organizers, and lower revenues for tour companies.

Starr Tours, with offices in Philadelphia and Trenton, New Jersey, usually sends more than 10,000 people to see Broadway shows every year.

Vice president Sandy Borowsky says that number will be down this year. The show stoppage has forced the cancellation of 8 buses so far. That represents more than 400 would-be theatergoers.

Deborah Joyce of Senior Citizens United Community Services of Camden County, New Jersey, says her group canceled a busload of travelers planning to see "Mamma Mia!" on Sunday.

CBS NEWS WRITERS AUTHORIZE STRIKE

About 500 CBS News television and radio writers - who work in New York, Los Angeles, Washington and Chicago - have been working under an expired contract since April 2005.

CBS News, a division of CBS Corp., said the vote was "unfortunate," calling its latest offer "fair and reasonable."

In a prepared statement, the company said it "remains fully prepared, and ready to continue producing the highest quality news programming."

In a vote held last Thursday, the union said 81 percent of the 300 writers who participated gave WGA negotiators the power to call a work stoppage.

"Writers Guild members are sending their CBS bosses an irrefutable message of solidarity: we will do whatever it takes to get what we have earned and deserve," Michael Winship, president of Writers Guild of America East, said in a prepared statement.

Class Acts | Rook reemerges with Paradigm Shift and Ring of Fire brings the legend of Johnny Cash

Although we haven't seen or heard much from Rook over the past year or so, that doesn't mean the band has closed up shop and called it a day. Far from it, actually. True, things did sow down to a crawl for a little while as things like the recording process, side projects and life in general got in the way, but that didn't stop Tulsa's premier progressive metal act from soldiering on--even if it was a long and tedious process.

This weekend Rook emerges with its long awaited debut album, Paradigm Shift, and celebrates its return to action with a big rock show at The Blank Slate. After hearing an advance copy of the new disc, I'm relieved to honestly say that the band's fans will not be disappointed.

The constants in the band and on the record are leading ladies Jocelyn Rowland-Hughes and Trisha McCrery and lead guitarist Matt Mchan.
