High hopes riding on overseas debut of kungfu dance drama

China is hoping that a much-acclaimed kungfu dance drama that did roaring trade domestically will find as much success in overseas markets and spread the country's cultural influence.

"Shaolin in the Wind", a fusion of traditional martial arts and modern dance techniques, will be performed in Australia next year, marking its first foray overseas after experiencing resounding success at home, the troupe organizer said.

The drama tells a poignant love story about two star-crossed lovers who are separated during wartime. The leading actor, who is rescued by the abbot of Shaolin Temple, takes up martial arts and later leads the Shaolin monks in expelling the enemy. CBS News Writers Give Union Bosses Power To Call a Strike

(AP-New York, NY, November 19, 2007) - - CBS News writers authorized their union leaders to call a national strike, the Writers Guild of America said Monday, escalating a labor impasse.

About 500 CBS News television and radio writers -- who work in New York, Los Angeles, Washington and Chicago -- have been working under an expired contract since April 2005.

CBS News, a division of CBS Corp., said the vote was "unfortunate," calling its latest offer "fair and reasonable."

In a prepared statement, the company said it "remains fully prepared, and ready to continue producing the highest quality news programming."

In a vote held last Thursday, the union said 81 percent of the 300 writers who participated gave WGA negotiators the power to call a work stoppage.

Event to help with Javernick medical bills

When he went fishing, he never dreamed his world would change so drastically before he could get back home.

Son of Mike Javernick and Micky Beaton, Chad Javernick was returning from a fishing trip Sept. 29, when his car crashed near Sargents, where two men found him at the scene. When help finally arrived, Javernick was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, where he remained for several weeks.

Because he works as a fly fisherman for six months in Alaska and the other six months in Cañon City, family and friends have planned a three-day fundraiser event to help with medical expenses.

The fundraiser kicks off at 9 a.m. Friday with a comedy performance at My Brother’s Place at 625 Main St. Performing will be Lori Callahan and Bruce Plasket, who will joke about their life in Cañon City.
